Hotel :
I booked a total tour package 9 days at seashell .. both PB and Havelock..
The hotel in PB is at a good location provided you are taking the Deluxe Sea View rooms.. I suppose those are the only rooms from where you can get the awesome view of the ocean..
The staff over there is courteous but but but they are very very slow.. If you order something to the room, they might "forget" or even take an hour to send it up..
Check if you are going in the offseason.. if thats the case then you can always ask for discounts..
I was not offered a single penny discount as I was there during the peak season 25th dec to 1st jan..
The only complimentary stuff that they offer to a couple is a "candle light dinner" at havelock..
Are you going to Havelock also?
Havelock is great place to be..
Seashell Havelock is also an amazing place to stay at..
The view from the hotel is awesome.. there is kind of a private beach that every hotel there has..
the only problem they have is, they dont have geysers and so you wont get hot water for bathing.
but May would be hot and humid.. and i dont think you would need hot water to bath..
but if thats the condition then check before you book..
Travel -
I had a tour package with the hotel itself and it cost me a lot for travel.
But yes you can get the tickets booked for ferry through the hotel itself..
Where to travel :
In PB -
1. dont miss the Cellular Jail..
2. Go to Wandoor (Gandhi Marine National Park) also called Jolly buoy..
3. I would say you can skip Samudrika and Anthropological museum without even thinking..
4. Carbyns Cove beach..
5. Ross Island/NorthBay/Viper Island - there is a tour boat which takes you to all three in a days time..
6. Chidiya Tapu - for the beautiful sunset and the biological park..
In Havelock -
1. Radhanagar beach.. Around 20kms road travel from seashell havelock..
There are no water activities here.. but the beach is one of the amazing beaches i have seen till now.. You can spend around 2-3 hours in the morning here.. Then you can do something else for the remaining time..
2. Elephant Beach.. Boat ride takes you there..
-- You can do snorkelling (costs Rs.200)
-- Glass Bottom Boat ride (costs Rs.200)
-- Speed boat ride (costs around 300 or so)
3. Scuba diving - If you dont do this in Havelock then you have missed a lot..
-- I booked my scuba through Barefoot resort. Costs Rs.4000/- for a fun dive.. but its worth it..
4. Then there are some short rounds around the waters of havelock.. i couldnt do it coz if some issues, but you can try.. the Mangrove dingy ride and evening country fishing..
You can add Neil Island to the itinerary.. I couldnt..
Tips :
1. Carry Umbrella.. It can rain anytime there.. Or a raincoat..
2. Carry Odomos..
3. Some basic medicines, ask your doctor and carry them along with you.. as medical assistance is very limited..
4. Carry Electral/Glucon-D just in case, coz PB/Havelock dont have these.. There are some other brands ..
My itinerary your reference :
Day I:>> Pick up from Airport.
:>> Visit to Carbyn's Cove Beach.
:>> Light & Sound & Sound Show.
Day II:>>Depart to Havelock. -- ferry at 8.45am.. reaches havelock at 10.30am..

Day III:>> Scuba Diving @ 4000/- per pax.. happens early in the morning..
Day IV:>> Trip to Radhanagar Beach

:>> Check in at Sea Shell, Port Blair.
Day VI(29/12/10):>> City Tour( museums & cellular Jail) -- skip museums.. arent worth even a penny..

Survival International, the worldwide organisation supporting tribal peoples, is launching a boycott of tourism to India’s Andaman Islands. We will maintain the boycott until the Andaman authorities put an end to the ‘human safaris’ along the illegal road through the land of the Jarawa tribe, and provide an alternative route which does not cut through the tribe’s land.
ReplyDeleteThe Jarawa have only had friendly contact with their neighbours since 1998, so tourists risk passing on diseases to which the tribe has little immunity, and which could decimate them. The convoys of tourist vehicles also stop the Jarawa from being able to move freely around their forest to hunt and gather.
Thousands of tourists, both Indian and international, travel along the road each month, treating the Jarawa like animals in a safari park. Some operators have even made members of the tribe dance in return for sweets and biscuits. One tourist described his trip thus: ‘The journey through tribal reserve was like a safari ride as we were going amidst dense tropical rainforest and looking for wild animals, Jarawa tribals to be specific’.
The ‘human safaris’ have been widely condemned by the highest authorities. India’s Minister for tribal affairs has called them, ‘disgraceful’, ‘obnoxious’ and ‘an embarrassment’. The UN wrote to the Indian government in 2012 to inform them they were ‘deeply concerned’ about the human safaris, and urged them to close the sections of the road that run through the Jarawa’s reserve.
The Andaman authorities were ordered by India’s Supreme Court to close the road where it cuts through the Jarawa’s land in 2002, but they have ignored this order. In January this year they were given the opportunity by India’s Supreme Court to do the honorable thing and take tourists off the road. Instead, they changed their own laws in order to allow the human safaris to continue: the Supreme Court order was revoked in March, and the degrading human safaris have been allowed to start again. It is in response to this that Survival is launching a boycott of Andaman tourism.
Please refrain from travelling to the Andamans and visit our website for more information and suggested action: http://www.survivalinternational.org/tribes/jarawa
